Nico died 20 years ago and would be 70 this month. As mentioned in my last post John Cale organised a tribute night in London which took place at the weekend. I think it was professionally filmed so will look out for this. Apparently, Cale was also wearing go go boots as a tribute to Nico. (He so copied me!)

John Cale shares his memories of Nico and her music career on BBC Radio 4 at the weekend and this interview can be heard here

Here is a photograph of James Dean Bradfield singing at the concert (Cale on keyboards):

A tribute To Nico

John Cale
is leading a tribute titled Life Along The Border: A Tribute To Nico which will be held on Saturday 11 October at the Southbank Centre, London. Acts confirmed are as follows:

  • Broadcast
  • Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
  • The Fiery Furnaces
  • James Dean Bradfield (Manic Street Preachers)
  • Nick Franglen
  • Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)
  • Liz Green
  • Natasha Khan
  • Mark Lanegan
  • Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse)
  • Peter Murphy (Bauhaus)

More names to be announced.

» southbankcentre.co.uk | Ticket Office: 0871 663 2500

I think that it is very fitting that John Cale is involved with this as he helped Nico on her way to being an established artist. Also Peter Murphy from Bauhaus knew Nico and worked with her.

I just wish I could go but only found out and so can't afford it.

So I bought these boots instead to pay homage:

Greetings, all. I'll be the first to admit that I've only really been interested in Nico for about a month, and so am really not as well-acquainted with her music as I should be, but it and her stunning beauty still fascinate me. I grew up listening to Bryan Ferry's version of 'All Tomorrow's Parties', which is much faster and more upbeat than the version recorded by Nico and the Velvets. The moment I got my hands on 'The Velvet Underground and Nico', though, it was pretty much love.

The deep, mournful drone that led off 'All Tomorrow's Parties' threw me, but I was intrigued enough after a few listens through to go after Nico's solo stuff, and I haven't looked back since.

But anyway, on to the gist of this post, sort of...

I haven't seen any talk here of Tilda Swinton playing Nico in David Mackenzie's biopic. I can't imagine anyone better for the role...I'm still not sure how I feel about a Nico movie, but I think Tilda, being such an amazing actress, will do her justice. In fact, Tilda's voice as the male title character in Sally Potter's "Orlando" (based on the Virginia Woolf book) reminds me very much of Nico's own.

hi all
in Nico's bigraphies they say that her first song was Serge Gainsborg's 'Strip-Teaze' from a film with the same name where she played a part. But another version was released.
So the question is: does anybody know if the (unreleased) record could be available anywhere? I'm a great fan of both Nico and Serge and it would make me happy to hear the song.

Neither of those Swedish girls who are going to be portraying Nico in either of those movies, are in my opinion, not at all right-looking.

This may seem like a stretch to some of you, but I've always personally felt that if there were to be a movie made about Nico's life, Uma Thurman ought to portray her.

They have very similar faces, heights, expressions, etc...Not to mention that Uma is to me a superb actress who would be known enough to draw attention to the movie, but not of such commercial pedigree as to miss Nico's essence.

These pictures to me, should make one take notice of the resesmblence.

Essential Nico?

Aug. 11th, 2004 | 10:22 am
posted by: perruche_verte in secret_side

Hello there,

I've mostly been lurking here, but that's not a really fruitful activity as we're not that active, even with this interesting movie being made.

So I thought I'd pose a question (which maybe ought to be in a FAQ): What's the essential Nico? What do you need to see, hear and read in order to experience this strange, beautiful artist at her best?

Let's divide it into two parts:

1. Films. I know nothing about her films, or how one can see them, since I'm assuming most were not distributed widely. You get additional style points in this category if you can tell how to find her films on VHS/PAL or digital, on the off chance that any of them have made it to digital.

2. Music. The records that John Cale produced or played on are the ones everybody seems to like, and probably most people into Nico are familiar with these. They would include:

Chelsea Girls
The Marble Index
Desertshore
The End

But she made a number of records with other people, some of which featured James Young on keyboards (and as co-composer) and I'm interested to know which of these are worth checking out.

Cheers to anyone who can help complete this list!

hello
i just purchased Nico, do or die: live in europe~
the tracks are not as listed.
Just the same as Nico Icon. Has anyone else noticed such?

also: i just purchased Velvet Underground rare trax vol.4
which includes Nico practicing
. . .
all tommorow's parties(twice),
these days,
i'll keep it with mine(twice),
little sister,(twice)
i'll be your mirror,
Femme Fatale,
'Little Queenie'
'Somebody'
'Child's christmas in wales'
and a recording of Chelsea Girls with Lou on guitar.

my question is: on little Queenie . . . it's really not a track it's a few seconds of distortion and the rest is blank. I am wondering if this is just a bad copy i have since i bought it used or if anyone else has this track and it's just not really a track.

So apparently a movie on Nico is in the works;
(from http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2004/05/27/high_noon_may_27_2004_news_article.shtml)
"Young Adam director David Mackenzie has signed up for Nico, the biopic of the model-singer-actress who made the Andy Warhol scene in the 60s. Based on the book Nico: The End by James Young, the film will follow Nico from her appearance in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita to her singing stint with Warhol's Velvet Underground, and the heroin addiction that almost ruined her life. Actually her ultimate undoing was a bicycle accident in Ibiza in 1988. That's right, a bicycle accident.
It's soooh not rock'n'roll, but apparently is fitting for a script described as "dark and funny". Writing team David and Janet Peoples, who penned 12 Monkeys, have adapted the book and are currently working on a rewrite with Mackenzie."

i'm not sure whether to be happy, or upset to be honest..

Welcome to our new member sinntv...who asked me what are the best books about Nico.
Well, the most famous bio is Songs They Never Play On The Radio, by James Young, published by Arrow, although Young's book is a bit controversial.

My favorite books are in French:
"L'amour n'oublie jamais",ed.Pauvert, by Ari Päffgen, Nico's son.
"In Camera",ed.Cahiers de Minuit, by Serge Féray, full of documentation, precise information about the records and Philippe Garrel films.
But the book you MUST have is "Cible Mouvante", ed.Pauvert:it's a collection of ALL Nico's lyrics and her unfinished diary. It was Ari's decision to publish it in 2001.I don't know if you can find it out of Europe, you can always try.The lyrics are all in their original language and translated into French, and so is the diary. The preface is by Ari himself.

And of course there is Susan Offteringer's film Nico Icon.

Henry Hudson
(Nico)

White light lays above
The Henry Hudson riverbank
And you will see a lady standing
Stealing past a happy ending
Staring at the happy landing

Her heart beats loud and fast
Her love looks like a broken glass

White light lays above
The riverbank
A sinking ship has brought the light
Upon the land
And Henry Hudson knows not where
The lady's standing

A lonely shoulder must grow older
Waiting on the riverbank

Speaking of Garrel, his son is in the new movie the dreamers, and he was the only good thing about it! I hated the movie, but Louis Garrel is quite a talented and handsome young man.

Blessed be this community.

Hi =) I'm new (obviously) and decided to drop by and express my admiration and love for the beautiful and tragic Nico.

I adore her and all things related to her.

My obsession with her began two years ago when I first saw "The Royal Tenenbaums", during the scene where the characters Margot (who actually kind of reminds me of Nico)and Richie are reunited in which "These days" started playing.

I was mesmerized by the somber beauty of the song and Nico's voice.

I've been completely dedicated to her ever since, from her music, to her morbidly enchanting life, to well, everything about her.

In closing this entry I'd like to say that I'm ECSTATIC that someone took the time to create a community for her!
